![]() Seminarian Howard Adkins watches passersby on Carrollton Ave. from the front porch of the seminary Thursday morning. While a group was sitting on the porch the previous evening, a National Guard truck pulled up at the request of Louisiana State Senator Nick Gautreaux. The guardsmen took the elderly guests and their caretakers to transportation that had been arranged for the group. The troops had not expected to find so many people at the seminary, however, so they were unable to transport everyone. It was dusk when they arrived, and they insisted on quickly loading the truck and driving out of the seminary before dark because they felt the situation was too dangerous with so many people desparate for help in the area. Of course they were fearful even with their M-16s but were leaving behind 20 civilians to fend for themselves in the night. The evacuating group hastily grabbed what they could and escaped the city Wednesday night. Next Previous |
